OSHA faulted for allowing North Carolina manufacturing workers to get occupational disease

The New York Times today published an article that exposes the hazards faced by workers in North Carolina and other states who are exposed to the chemical n-propyl bromide, or nPB.   The chemical is used by workers in our state who glue together foam cushions for chairs and couches in the furniture industry.  The workers in NC plants apply the glue to blocks of foam using spray guns, and the glue ends up in the air inside the plant, coating the workers’ clothes, hair, and lungs.   Over-exposure to nPB causes damage to nerve endings, so that the workers’ feet become numb or...

State Senator introduces bill to gut regulations protecting workers

State Senator Harry Brown, a business owner, has introduced Senate Bill 174, which, if it became law, would repeal a large number of regulations currently in place at the North Carolina Industrial Commission.  Many of these regulations are important for the protection of injured workers.    For example, the bill would repeal the regulations governing emergency medical motions, which are important when an injured worker’s doctor says the worker needs medical treatment but the employer won’t pay for it. Boy Scouts hid information about abusers in Raleigh area

The Raleigh News & Observer has run an article about cover-ups by the Boy Scouts of America of sex abuse  committed by volunteer scoutmasters in North Carolina.    In “The Nightmare of Troop 39,”, reporter Bruce Siceloff describes numerous scout leaders who were labeled “ineligible volunteers” by the Boy Scouts.  Although the Boy Scouts prevented those pedophiles from abusing other boy scouts, they did not inform parents that their sons had been abused.  Nor did they report their findings to law enforcement. Boy Scouts of America and Church of Latter-day Saints settle sex abuse lawsuit

In a case that was pending in an Idaho federal court, there has been a settlement between a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and both the Boy Scouts of America and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  The plaintiff alleged that he was abused by his scoutmaster over a three-year period in the 1960s in Oregon and Idaho. He said that the two groups, which ran the scouting group together, had not done enough to protect the children in its care.
